I just cut my hair off about a month ago. And for the few weeks leading up to the big chop, short hair was my choice topic of convo with everyone because I’m anal.

Anyway, my roommate and I both read this article in Elle written by a woman who despite her boyfriend’s wishes, cut all her hair off. When she came home, she could tell from the way he looked at her that he wasn’t as attracted to her now, which he later admitted. It’s an interesting proposition: some guys don’t like short hair on girls. The author interviewed Patti Stanger from Millionaire Matchmaker (which I love and can’t wait for it to come back on Bravo). Patti claimed that men don’t grow up thinking of women with short hair. She said, “Prince Charming doesn’t save the princess who has an edgy bob.” Which is true.

However, I can’t say the same for myself. All the women that I was closely related to and that nurtured me as a child had short hair. My mother, grandmother, all my aunts had short hair and they always have. Even my grandfather preferred short hair on women.

I’m lucky that Paul subscribes more to the “to each his/her own” attitude and focuses more on whether a haircut is flattering on a person rather than whether it’s more or less feminine or masculine. But this is a rarity in guys, or seems to be. I have a guy friend in law school whom I had a discussion with about this. I showed him a picture of a girl with the haircut I wanted to get, and another where she had long hair. I clearly thought that she looked better with short hair. It slimmed her face, made her eyes look bigger, etc. He disagreed. He subscribed to the long hair theory and insisted that she looked better with it. I thought her face looked puffy.

Either way, I definetly notice that when I look at a magazine all but maybe two of the models in it will have long hair. And I always zero in on the two with short hair because they’re different. They’re always styled to be “edgy”, but I think they usually look more graceful and lithe. I don’t understand why a girl has to edgy if she has short hair. She can be as graceful as Audrey Tautou or as cute as Michelle Williams. It seems that being edgy is the excuse. Oh- she has short hair, she isn’t the norm, she must be edgy. No, I just didn’t want to blowdry my hair for twenty minutes and clog up my vacuum cleaner everytime I turn it on.
